There was a lot of expectation on X-Beam to stay within reach of the top two sides in the competition, Solomon Warriors and Koloale, but the result today sees them drift 10 points behind the former who is certainly enjoying its closest chasers falter this week.
Alick Maemae had the best chance to hand X-Beam the winner from the penalty spot but he sent his attempt way over the crossbar. Malaita Kingz, on the other hand, generated their fair share of opportunities but poor discipline saw their best attempts go to waste after they were flagged offside time and time again.
The first half played out quite evenly as possession see-sawed between the two sides. Michael Misitana drove the attack for Malaita Kingz but the absence of support from the midfield often left the winger without options.
Joses Nawo debuted for his new club but had little to show on the pitch with only a few attempts that were off target. Kidston Billy came on late for X-Beam but the match was at such a stalemate there was little he could do as both coaches shifted emphasis to defence in the closing stages of the match.
Willie Omokirio, who took over from Batram Suri as Malaita Kingz’s coach after the first round, appeared the happier one at the end of the match. He was able to prevent his club from defeat in his first outing and it is worthy feat considering the depth and experience of the opposition.
X-Beam will surely return to the drawing board this week as they try to come up with a game plan that enables them to make use of the speed of Nawo on the wing. Caroll Kakate will return from suspension in their next match and could just be the partner Nawo needs.
